State of the Union

We had a really good sermon by Alan Piner yesterday. As I was listening, I got to thinking about how passionate I get about politics. For some reason, I get sucked into these debates with some of my friends on the left about this or that, economics, social topics, etc. Every time I do, I go into the conversation thinking “this person isn’t ever going to change my mind”, yet however, do I honestly think that there are any comments that I’m going to make that are going to change their mind? Probably not. So why do I get suckered in every time?

When thinking about the state that this country is in with its ever-increasing acceptance of acts like abortion as a common medical practice, with homosexual lifestyles as just part of the human evolutionary process, with government dependency as just part of life when things get tough, it’s increasingly frustrating to watch your country, with all of the wonderful things that it has to offer, going down that road which has brought some many other civilizations to an end.

Yet, when I think about these things, my thoughts always end at the comforting place that God is, has been, and always will be in control. This thought coupled with the thought that this world will one day pass away with all of its temporal darkness and evil, brings a true sense of peace.

One of the passages that was cited last night and really struck home with me, especially with the dry weather that we’ve been having, was Habakkuk 3:17-19, where Habakkuk states:

“Though the fig tree should not blossom

And there be no fruit on the vines,

Though the yield of the olive should fail

And the fields produce no food,

Though the flock should be cut off from the fold

And there be no cattle in the stalls,

Yet I will exult in the Lord,

I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.

The Lord God is my strength,

And He has made my feet like hinds’ feet,

And makes me walk on my high places.”

This world is often times a dark depressing place and we can take comfort in knowing that God is in control and that we have a hope in a promise of a place of eternal rest that he has prepared for his faithful children.
