Day 1

I recently volunteered to become a Big Brother of Central Indiana. I felt like there was more that I could be doing for people in my community that could gain from my experiences and willingness to become a mentor.

The application process was very smooth and quick. You could tell that this organization had been fine tuning this set of tasks for some time now. There was an online application including a background check and the providing of personal and professional references, an interview that takes about an hour, and a four-hour class discussing what we, as “Bigs” should expect and how to best handle situations that would arise.

Very quickly I was presented with Isaac’s case. I got a little bit of information about his family, his history, why he was in search of a Big Brother. I didn’t see any reason at all that I wouldn’t want to meet him so I agreed. I soon received notification that his family had accepted me as well.

Tonight I was able to go and meet Isaac and his mother. He seems like a great kid! I think that he and I are going to have a lot of fun together. We seemed to click right away. I’m looking forward to spending time with him.

We made plans to meet up again Thursday night. We are going to go to the mall and buy a calendar for him to write down what we do on what days.
