Saturday, 12/13
Not an incredibly exciting weekend. After traveling to Logan Utah for work earlier in the week, I got home at about 3AM Saturday. So, as anyone would, I slept in until 9:00. After waking, checking my Twitter feed, being criticized by Sonya for being on my electronics instead of spending time with my family, and then snuggling with her for a few minutes (because she missed me), I got out of bed for the day. What happened next was nothing short of completely normal.
Before leaving for Sam’s Club and Walmart, Sonya suggested I do something “incredible”, “extraordinary”, or “something”, with the kids and then left to get Rosie’s shots and to attempt to determine her source of itching (it was fleas). Well, it was an extraordinary three episodes of Arrow that we watched on Netflix, I tell you. At least I was able to motivate the kids enough to get dressed for the day. Quite an accomplishment I think.
We met Mommy at McDonald’s for lunch before she was off again, this time to Walmart to get the week’s groceries. On the way back to Slackville, Eli and I reflected on a scene in the movie Monsters Vs. Aliens where the president interacts with the aliens for the first time. We laughed about it so much that we went back to watch it (rented from Google Play). Good quality time spent with the kids if you ask me. After that it was back to Arrow for the boys, some reading for Savannah, and off to studying for the Adult Class at church for me. That evening, we watched The Polar Express, a family tradition around the holidays.
Zach introduced me to a new game “that I had to get!” called Trivia Crack. True to the name, it is an addicting online trivia game with questions in six categories: Entertainment, History, Geography, Art, Science, and Sports (Sports being my “favorite”). You play either Facebook friends or a random person (who I’m convinced is playing the game while sitting next to Google, because no one is that smart). Fun game. I’m sure it will distract me from what I need to be doing quite often. It’s really just what I needed.
Sunday, 12/14
Sunday, for the most part, was just another Sunday. Sonya and Savannah had their Little Keepers meeting. We had an Elder-Deacon meeting in the afternoon before services to discuss 2015. However something did happen that I doubt I’ll ever forget.
I’m an idiot. Surprise, I know. Believe it. Before we sold our old van, I’d pulled the hitch off of it to sell separately. A guy called me about it Saturday and wanted to meet Sunday afternoon for the exchange. We met for the sale at Dick’s and off we went. Turns out I’d taken out my laptop bag from the trunk to get the hitch and left it there. Drove off without it. Left it right there in the parking lot at Dick’s. It had my work computer, my tablet, my bible, and my songbook. Basically, I would have been completely up a creek if I’d lost this bag. When we got to church that evening, I opened the trunk and it was gone! Where could it be?? It must be at Mamaw’s – I must have taken it in without realizing it. Yeah, that must have been it. Then I got a call that went to voicemail during services. A couple had found it in the back of their truck – someone had put it there for some reason. They went though it, found my number when they powered up my tablet, and gave me a call. Ya know, it’s not often that you hear stories about good people doing good things. But this is definitely one of them. I got extremely lucky.
Another thing that is worth mentioning about Sunday is about that evening. After the kids went to bed, Sonya and I had a really good talk for about an hour just going over things that had gone on over the weekend and such. I really felt close to her during that. I realized as we were talking that we don’t do that enough – just talk, her and I. I need to make it a point to do that with her more often. I really love her. She is so great for me and for our family and she does things often without recognition from the kids or from me for that matter. I don’t know that there is anyone else out there that could be any better for me.
Good weekend. Except for the laptop thing. That was bad.
I am happy to hear that there are still honest people who make efforts to discover the true owner of a laptop and return it to them when it is mysteriously placed in their truck. Others would have thought they hit the jackpot and kept the laptop for their own use. After all, they didn’t exactly steal it. It could be rationalized as a gift from someone who no longer wanted it.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, especially all your very cute kids!
